A classic staple in New York’s dining scene, Balthazar is known for its blend of elegance and comfort, drawing in locals and tourists alike.

  • The Burger: Balthazar Cheeseburger (Tier 2). A simple construction with a cracked pepper-soaked patty and cheddar cheese on a house-baked sesame seed bun. It’s served open-faced with veggies, but I suggest it without allowing the meat’s silky smooth texture to take center stage. The pepper is pungent, engaging both sight and taste while beautifully rounding out the burger's flavors. The toasted bun is a difference-maker with a fluffy interior, a perfectly calibrated crispness, and a remarkable ability to soak up all the juices. Accompanying the burger are abundant, one-of-a-kind fries – crispy perfection. Notably, ketchup is absent, preserving the burger's delicate harmony.

  • Pro Tip: The Beef Short Rib entree is decadent and literally melts in your mouth.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. This sophisticated yet approachable Parisian-inspired setting is complete with brushed mirrors, antique decor, and rustic charm. The red leather banquet seating evokes a sense of classic elegance, while the beautiful bar adds to the allure. It’s touristy but still flawlessly trendy. Be ready for cozy seating with tables close together.

  • The Location: SoHo, Spring Street & Crosby Street.

Midtown location bar area

Black Iron Burger has made a name for itself with its creative twists on classic flavors.

  • The Burger: The Black Iron (Tier 2). This one's for horseradish lovers. With two 4oz patties, stout carmelized grilled onions, horseradish cheddar, and horseradish mayo sandwiched between a hearty brioche bun, this burger brings you on a comforting and intriguing journey.

  • Pro Tip: No substitutions are allowed on their signature burgers. Enjoy their awesome sides and house-made sauces also on the menu.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Groups. A casual setting that welcomes both solo diners and groups looking for a satisfying meal. Black Iron Burger features a full bar and also hosts private events.

  • The Location: Multiple locations. Midtown, Theater District.

This Buffalo Bills bar is known for its amazing wings, burgers, and scratch-made sauces.

  • The Burger: Bacon Blue Burger (Tier 2). It doesn’t matter what type of burger you get, or if you create your own, it will be a good one. What sets Bonnie's burgers apart is their unique approach to seasoning and cooking. Each patty is seasoned in a special blend before being seared over an open flame, locking in the flavors. This signature combination adds a depth of flavor that elevates every burger on the menu. All burgers feature a plump Angus beef patty and a generous helping of cheese on a dense sesame seed brioche bun. The Bacon Blue Burger takes it to the next level with crispy, deep-fried bacon and a pile of rich, pungent blue cheese that perfectly complements the meat.

  • Pro Tip: Don't miss their famous wings, made fresh in-house with a secret spice blend and served with scratch-made sauces. These are a must.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: At The Counter. There is plenty of counter and table seating in a nostalgic, 1950s-style diner setting. Think black and white checkered floors, vinyl records on the walls, and retro charm.

  • The Location: Park Slope, 5th Avenue & Garfield Place.

Burgerhead’s motto, “We don’t smash. We cook!” perfectly encapsulates their unique burger concept centered around charburgers cooked over an open flame and classic American burger joint favorites. In today’s burger world dominated by flattops, smash burgers, and potato rolls, Burgerhead evokes nostalgia by reminding us of the beloved outdoor grill experience many grew up with, while also paying homage to the golden era of fast food.

  • The Burger: Charburger (Tier 2). A 4oz patty, American cheese, tomato, onion, pickle, shredded lettuce, and house sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun. Putting a modern twist on the essence of a backyard BBQ and the nostalgic flavors of Burger King's Whopper,, Burgerhead's signature burger is a delight. The burger's char-grilled preparation lets the meat flavor shine, and when wrapped, everything steams together nicely, enhancing every bite with a satisfying smokiness and a welcome absence of grease.

  • Pro Tip: The double is just as delicious and balanced. Must-try items include the beef tallow fries, reminiscent of McDonald’s classic days, and the onion rings served with a side of house sauce.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Quick / Casual. A welcoming and bright storefront offering cozy indoor seating.

  • The Location: Greenwich Village, 6th Avenue  & West 4th Street.

Cafe Chelsea provides an elegant French Bistro setting serving up an expertly crafted dining experience.

  • The Burger: Chelsea Cheeseburger (Tier 2). Dry aged beef, mornay sauce, and raw onion between a bun that’s loaded with sesame seeds. The beef comes medium rare with a superb char outside and an incredible juiciness inside. The smooth Mornay sauce, infused with Gruyère cheese and a hint of nutmeg, gracefully drapes over the patty, adding a subtle warmth and depth; its tanginess is pronounced yet pleasant. A delicate sprinkling of razor-thin raw onions adds a crisp, clean flavor. This burger is luxurious and elegant with an edge; it’s thick but approachable; simple yet one-of-a-kind. Frites are included, served with ketchup and dijonnaise for dipping.

  • Pro Tip: You’ve surely seen the viral Ravioles du Dauphiné by now, and they’re good, but I expected more. Still, it's worth it. The Ile Flottante dessert is creamy bliss.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. Cafe Chelsea offers multiple, uniquely exquisite Art Deco-esque dining spaces that involve grandeur and drama, while the intimate seating area creates a warm and lively atmosphere. The service is equally impressive, striking a perfect balance between fancy and friendly.

  • The Location: Chelsea, West 23rd between 7th and 8th Avenues.

Carriage House offers a beautiful upscale yet casual setting tucked away on a quiet West Village street. The burger is one of the biggest sellers on their menu, and for good reason.

  • The Burger: The CH Burger (Tier 2). Double smashed Wagyu, dijon aioli, bread and butter pickles, and American cheese served on a custom-made Milk brioche sesame seed bun. This carefully crafted bun provides a sturdy foundation with a soft, pillowy interior that perfectly contains this hearty burger. These generously proportioned patties (I estimate 4oz each) are paired with onion just before they’re flipped, providing a unique balance of raw and caramelized flavors. The aioli’s blend of mustard and lemon undertones adds a tangy and creamy element, while the sweetness from the bread and butter pickles completes this distinctive flavor profile.

  • Pro Tip: The burger is only available at the bar or during brunch. Fries are not included, but their Everything Bagel Fries with a side of Caviar aioli are a worthwhile addition.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: At The Counter. Beyond its stunning bar and exceptional burger, come here for a date night, drinks, or a fun night out with friends in a chic, modern setting.

  • The Location: West Village, West 10th Street between Waverly Place & Greenwich Avenue.

The Dram Shop Bar is a neighborhood favorite that’s sure to please both regulars and newcomers.  It’s a sports bar with tons of TVs and a pool table, but that's not all - their amazing menu features all the classics along with some Tex-Mex.

  • The Burger: The Dram Burger (Tier 2). Double patty, American cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, diced onion, mustard, and mayo on a sesame seed bun. A handful of comfort, this is a double cheeseburger done right.

  • Pro Tip: Come for the burger, but stay for everything else. Enjoy their vast beer, wine, and cocktail selection and come with your appetite, because their menu has it all.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: At The Counter. A laid-back and welcoming atmosphere with a long bar, booth seating, and more that will fit any occasion.

  • The Location: Park Slope, 339 9th Street.

Tucked away in a tiny Chinatown storefront, this authentic Dominican spot packs a massive flavor punch with its traditional cuisine and one-of-a-kind twist on the classic smash burger.

  • The Burger: Dominican Smashburger (Tier 2). Double Pat Lafrieda patty, Fried Dominican cheese, American cheese, pickles, and Chimi sauce on a Martin’s Potato roll. This burger is absolutely layered, with 3oz patties perfect for a double and the thick slab of Queso de Freír fried cheese on top. Despite its generous ingredients, the burger achieves a perfect balance of textures and flavors. Bread and butter pickles add brightness, while the crispy, golden-brown fried cheese exhibits a mild, slightly sweet flavor with a satisfying crunch and a nice chew. The creamy American cheese and rich Chimi sauce bring everything together, with the sauce ingeniously elevating a familiar ketchup-mayo combo to exceptional heights.

  • Pro Tip: The Loaded Fries are a must-try. Pair your meal with a refreshing Morir Soñando or Passion Fruit drink and explore the generously portioned Dominican favorites on the menu.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Quick. Casual and perfect for takeout. Everything is served in round aluminum to-go containers, and seating is limited, with only one table and a few chairs inside.

  • The Location: Chinatown, 83 Baxter Street

Bonus Thought: Starting Spring 2025, you'll also find El Sazón R.D. serving up Smashburgers and other menu favorites at their brand-new location in Bogardus Plaza, TriBeCa.

This neighborhood institution, the OG Pizza Loves Emily location, has built a reputation for serving exceptional wood-fired pizzas and burgers. Its cozy atmosphere and commitment to excellence make it a must-visit destination. The Emmy Burger is a standout star – and for good reason.

  • The Burger: Emmy Burger (Tier 2). Pat LaFrieda dry-aged beef, EMMY sauce, caramelized onion, and Grafton cheddar on a pretzel bun with cornichon & fries. Importantly, it’s served with a wet nap, hinting at the experience to come. This burger shines with an exceptionally elegant flavor that will win over dry-aged skeptics and connoisseurs. The patty is thick and melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly complemented by a harmonious balance of flavors from the sweet caramelized onions and tangy EMMY sauce. The soft pretzel bun is eager to absorb all the juices. The fries are super crispy and addictive, served with a natural ketchup that adds a touch of authenticity to this outstanding burger.

  • Pro Tip: The chef recommends medium-rare, and this one is worth considering cutting in half! Also, eat the pizzas.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. This cozy spot delivers a warm atmosphere, complete with a visible wood-burning oven that promises outstanding fare.

  • The Location: Clinton Hill, Fulton Street, between Clinton Avenue and Waverly Avenue.

Bonus Thought: The single-patty Emmy Burger at Emily Brooklyn outdoes its double-patty West Village counterpart. One thick, exceptionally tender patty makes all the difference, allowing the burger to eat more cleanly, showcasing the outstanding melt-in-your-mouth beef, and achieving a perfect balance of flavors.

Emily's commitment to culinary excellence extends to their burger creations, offering a delightful journey of flavors.

  • The Burger: Emmy Double Stack Burger (Tier 2). Indulge in a burger that's a work of art, with dry-aged patties that ooze with flavor. Featuring two dry-aged grass fed patties, EMMY sauce, caramelized onion, American cheese, and pickle on a pretzel bun. Served with waffle fries. The succulent EMMY sauce drips from this burger and will want you savoring every drop - don’t wear a white shirt and keep your napkin at the ready!

  • Pro Tip: Bring your appetite. This burger is a belly buster, but you need to save space for their deep-dish pizzas.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. This is a fun and casual spot fit for a date or to catch up with friends. Lunch or dinner, it doesn’t matter.

  • The Location: West Village, Downing Street & Bedford Street.

Fairfax is a cozy West Village hangout with a personality as bold as its burger. The space is packed with character - every corner filled with eclectic decor and vintage charm. The burger itself carries a legacy, resurrecting the beloved Bar Sardine creation that once lived just across the street.

  • The Burger: The Burger (from Bar Sardine) (Tier 2). BBQ mayo, cheddar, crispy potatoes, and red onion. Formerly known as the Fedora Burger, this one brings it. This medium-sized, lightly packed patty is cooked to a Chef-recommended tender medium rare. It’s served between a toasted bun that’s top is so squished it looks more like a pancake while the soft, fluffy bottom soaks up all the juices. The tangy mayo packs a subtle kick, complemented by a refreshing crisp from the onion and pickles, and the satisfying crunch of potato straws.

  • Pro Tip: They also have a gluten free bun option. Consider pairing your burger with charred broccolini, a light, refreshing, and nutritious side, offering a delightful alternative to their Old Bay Tots.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: With Drinks. Fairfax exudes a unique, eclectic charm with a cozy atmosphere filled with quirky touches and vintage decor, including captivating taxidermy and intricately arranged art. Enjoy exceptional outdoor seating, perfect for any occasion.

  • The Location: West Village, West 10th Street & West 4th Street.

At Gramercy Tavern, simplicity reigns with their single burger offering. Their classic masterpiece epitomizes straightforward elegance - this burger deserves your attention.

  • The Burger: The Tavern Burger (Tier 2). A dry-aged chuck and short rib blend, ground in-house and grilled over hardwood flames is topped with cheddar and bacon. It’s served on a sourdough starter whole-wheat sesame seed bun, baked fresh daily. The cheddar’s uniquely melted and poured onto the burger, creating a smooth layer that melds into shape. This combination offers a perfect balance of salty, buttery, and juicy flavors without any greasiness, while the bun’s pillowy and airy pockets, saturated with savory juices, make every bite a delight. Served cut in half and with sides of Duck Fat Potato Chips and Smoked Onion Aoli.

  • Pro Tip: There are two areas - the “dining room” and “tavern”, with the burger exclusively available in the latter. Chef recommends medium rare. Don’t use aioli on the burger. Ordering it without bacon accentuates the cheese.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. The rustic yet sophisticated tavern setting provides a cozy, warm, and well-lit atmosphere. Tables offer a spacious experience, with ~20 bar seats available for walk-ins.

  •  The Location: Gramercy, 20th Street & Park Avenue.

Bash Burger in the foreground, Lure Style Burger in the background.

A seafood restaurant…with a burger? Yes, two on the menu to be precise, with one of them taking home accolades from The NYC Wine & Food Festival’s Burger Bash.

  • The Burger: Bash Burger (Tier 2). Bacon onion jam, thinly shaved pickles, American cheese. The soft sesame seed bun molds to your fingers and soaks up all the burger juices. Bacon is chopped and blended nicely into the jam; super flavorful but not overpowering. Plated cut in half, held together by wooden skewers and onion rings, and served with a side of fries, ketchup, and mayo. The Lure Style Burger is also on the menu - also very good and on the traditional side, but the Bash Burger is the star of the show.

  • Pro Tip: Burgers are only on the menu from 5pm. Very greasy (in the right way), so keep your napkin at the ready! They have a large bar to accommodate walk-ins.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night / Reservations Recommended. A place to see and be seen with nautical touches throughout - it feels like you’re in an upscale ship in the middle of SoHo.

  • The Location: SoHo, Mercer & Prince.

In a city filled with burger joints, Handcraft Burgers and Brew stands out from the pack with its commitment to quality and creativity.

  • The Burger: Multiple (Tier 2). These are smash burgers with Certified Angus Meat done right…so good I can’t pick just one!

    • Spicy Ultimate Smash - One 3 oz Smashed Beef Patty with Shaved Onions, Sharp American Cheddar Cheese, Mr. Bing Sriracha Mayo, and Jalapenos on a Potato Roll. The texture of this burger is sublime, with smooth, effortless bites and a fantastic mouthfeel. It’s perfectly proportioned as a single-patty burger. The custom in-house siracha mayo expertly balances the heat of the jalapeños, adding a rich and creamy element to each bite.

    • Double Ultimate Smash - Two 3 oz Smashed Beef Patties with Shaved Onions, Sharp American Cheddar Cheese, Handcraft Sauce, and Pickles on a Potato Roll. The pickles add a nice burst of flavor and crunch, overlapping slightly to add depth to each bite. The fried onions in the middle add a nice flavor while the Handcraft sauce delivers. Whether you opt for the double or single patty version, this burger will surely hit the spot.

    • The Oklahoma - Single Smashed Beef Patty Smashed With Shaved Onions, Sharp American Cheddar Cheese, Mayo, Dijon Mustard, and Pickles, on a Brioche Bun. The tangy zip of mustard and mayo balances out the richness of the cheddar and beef. The shaved onions add a depth of flavor and a hint of sweetness, while the brioche bun provides a soft, slightly sweet base that holds everything together perfectly.

    • OG - Double Smashed Beef Patties, Sharp American Cheddar, Handcraft Sauce, Shredded Romaine Lettuce, and Tomato, on a Brioche Bun. This is simply a classic done right.

  • Pro Tip: Handcraft's entire burger menu is impressive. Be sure to check out their rotating Burger of the Month, expertly paired with a craft beer from their extensive selection. Don't miss their house-made sauces, and for the adventurous, explore their secret menu, hidden in plain sight within the kiosk.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Quick / Casual. Order at their kiosks and seat yourself in their friendly setting.

  • The Location: Theater District, 40th Street between Broadway & 6th Avenue.

  • The Burger: Harlem Classic (Tier 2). Two smashed patties of their proprietary burger blend, homemade pickles, white onion, special sauce, and one slice of American cheese on a buttered and toasted Martin’s potato roll. These patties are seared to perfection, so much so that their picture should be the official definition of a smash burger.

  • Pro Tip: You may be tempted, but don’t add an extra slice of cheese; they do one slice right!  In addition to the Harlem Classic, a visit is incomplete without trying their Harlem Jerk or Hot Mess burgers. Tucked away on the Upper East Side, Hoexter's is a sophisticated gem serving up exceptional burgers and ambiance. The ‘o’ is silent, but Hoexter’s presence resonates loudly in the burger scene.

  • The Burger: Hoexter’s Double-Smash Cheeseburger (Tier 2). New School American cheese, pickles, and special sauce with fries. The menu description suggests thin and crispy smashed patties, but at 4ozs each they deliver a fresh twist that’s meaty, juicy, and oh-so satisfying. The cheese prominently delivers, the crinkle-cut pickles add a delightful crunch, and the sauce adds a tangy edge. The custom-made white and black sesame seed bun elevates the burger. Characterized by its remarkable freshness, delicate balance of density and fluffiness, and multi-layered texture, it expertly absorbs juices without sacrificing structural integrity. This exceptional bun is integral to the burger's flavor profile, making it a true highlight. Each bite is smooth thanks to the elegantly balanced components, precise proportions, and absence of extraneous ingredients.

  • Pro Tip: The Gorgonzola Garlic Bread and Ice Cream Sundae are two of their top sellers beyond the burger. The Loaded Baked Potato is divine and the Little Gem Lettuce refreshing.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Date Night. Upscale elegance meets neighborhood hospitality. The dark wallpaper, bold red banquettes, and stylishly dressed waitstaff evoke the intimacy of a downtown hideaway and infuse the space with refinement.

K.O. Burger

This casual boxing-themed smashed burger spot is a knockout in every way, serving up top-notch burgers at the corner of Chinatown.

  • The Burger: Double Knockout Burger (Tier 2). Smashed patties, American cheese, onions, K.O. Sauce, ketchup, mustard, pickles, and pickled Jalapenos on a Martin’s potato roll. They call their doubles heavyweights, and for good reason. The beef patty flavor prominently shines through despite the abundance of toppings. Noteworthy highlights include super crispy edges, a delightful punch from the jalapenos, and a generous helping of melted American cheese and sauce. This unapologetically greasy handheld is a true contender in the world of burgers.

  • Pro Tip: Don't let the jalapenos scare you off – their subtle kick adds a unique flavor dimension without overwhelming spice.

Bonus Thought: I came here on a busy eating day, planning only to have a few bites, but I couldn’t resist finishing it. Love this one, but two missteps kept it from being a top-tier burger - raw onions and ketchup. I'll be back to try their other offerings. Shoutout to Andy for top-notch service!

The onions are cooked to a stunning, deep, amber color, adding depth and sweetness to each bite. The textures play beautifully together, with the crispy English muffin giving way to the juicy patty, bold, pungent flavors, and a creamy richness that ties everything together. • The Burger: 8oz Bacon Cheeseburger & Fries (Tier 2). Juicy, peppery, cheesy, bacon-y…this one hits all the marks. The bacon is uniquely tucked in between the patty and melted American Cheese.

  • Pro Tip: Some may think, “I’ll skip the bacon”. Don’t; to do without would be blasphemy. It’s juicy enough not to need any condiments. Served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle, you can put ‘em all on or do without…dealer’s choice.

Swoony's is a welcoming neighborhood gem serving up exceptional burgers and creative twists. The moment you step in, you'll feel right at home.

  • The Burger: Swoony’s Burger (Tier 2). Double patty, Thousand Island, and American Cheese served with fries. The bun steals the show - a game-changing hybrid of a Portuguese roll, an English muffin, and a pancake. Lightly toasted and super soft, it's the perfect foundation. Initial bites reveal familiar flavors - rich meat, a mustardy kick from the sauce, and a subtle sweetness from the ketchup. The patties are nicely smashed and super wide with crispy edges, balanced by gooey American cheese. Simply put, this is one of a kind.

  • Pro Tip: While the burger is outstanding, don't overlook the rest of their innovative menu offerings. The Deviled Eggs are silky and smooth, the Blue Cheese Olives are a surprisingly excellent combo that’s super rich and creamy, and the Shrimp Cocktail brings a fresh spin to this classic blending of Old Bay seasoning and creamy tabasco aioli. These three starters harmonize perfectly.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: With Drinks. The atmosphere is elegant and approachable, perfect for relaxed evenings or a first date. The spacious bar, beautiful interior, white ceilings, and ornate light fixtures create a warm ambiance complemented by attentive service.

  • The Location: Columbia Street Waterfront District, Columbia Street & Sackett Street.

An Irish bar’s bar, Tierney's Tavern pours a creamy pint and serves up a great burger. The best burger in the east? That’s what their regulars say, and this burger backs it up. Tierney’s is the perfect spot to eat, drink, and have a day with your friends.

  • The Burger: Cheeseburger (Tier 2). Meat, cheese, and your choice of toppings on a soft white bun. A juicy patty that's not thick like a traditional pub burger and portioned just right.

  • Pro Tip: Order their off-menu Buddy Burger - named after their late co-owner Edward “Buddy” Tierney - with bacon, fried onions, and American cheese.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: Dive. Head there on the weekends, where they feature live music upstairs. As I said, it's an Irish bar’s bar. What more is there to say?

A hidden gem in the East Village, Virginia's serves up elevated comfort food in a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

  • The Burger: Virginia’s Burger (Tier 2). Cabot Cheddar, Onion Marmalade, and Marrow Aioli. Right off the bat, two things stand out - this is an elegantly balanced burger, and the bun is special. The beef is thick but incredibly tender, cooked to a juicy medium-rare, and seasoned just right. Cheese blankets the patty in a smooth, creamy layer. The marrow aioli, rich and silky, sits on the top bun, seeping into the burger for a refined depth of flavor. The onion marmalade, thinly sliced and layered on the bottom bun, acts as a subtle yet flavorful foundation for the beef. The brioche bun is supremely soft and buttery, with a delicate toastiness inside and out. Its subtle crunch adds a satisfying texture while the airy interior remains light and inviting. Pickles come on the side, but the burger was even better without - save them as a snack.

  • Pro Tip: They offer the option to add bacon or an egg, but don’t mess with perfection. Take advantage of their Happy Hour menu, which includes a fantastic deal on the burger, fries, and a drink. Also, keep an eye out for their special smash burger, offered occasionally.

  • The Occasion & Vibe: With Drinks. A spot to enjoy with good company, Virginia's offers a cozy ambiance with a refined, welcoming feel. Modern restaurant-themed art adorns the walls, adding charm to the bright, airy interior. The inviting bar and top-notch sidewalk seating complete the laid-back village vibe.

Every element harmonizes perfectly, creating a delightful medley of flavors. The roll is expertly griddled on both sides, achieving a satisfying sear on the top. As you unveil these delectable burgers from the white paper bag wrapped in checkered parchment paper, it's an instant confirmation that you came to the right place.
